Beca de 3 años para Doctorado en Ciclo de Nitrógeno y Biosensores en el medio marino.

Doctorado en Dinamarca, en Aarhus University, Department of Biological Sciences, Microbiology Unit.

A 3-year Ph.D. fellowship for work on biosensors in oceanography is available at Aarhus University, Department of Biological Sciences, Microbiology Unit. The fellowship (about Euro 3300 per month before tax) is financed by the European Union, and as it aimed at stimulating international mobility, successful applicants should have spent less than 12 months in Denmark within the last 3 years.
- The candidate will work with the application and further refinement of microscale nitrate biosensors for marine research. The sensors will be used to elucidate nitrogen transformations in seawater and sediment.
- The candidate will also be trained in making and using other types of microsensors (oxygen, nitrite, nitrous oxide, pH, and hydrogen sulfide) for analysis of microbial metabolism in the sea.
- The application of the sensors on various types of automated instruments for analysis directly in the marine environment will take place during 6-month stays at Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, Germany, and University of Southampton, UK.
- Some field work is also expected to take place off the Chilean coast. A description of the overall project should appear at http://www.eu-sensenet.net/

- The scholarship is open for persons who have finished their Master’s degree in oceanography, chemistry, microbiology, biogeochemistry, biotechnology, or similar fields.
- The deadline for receipt of applications is August 1, 2009. The successful applicant will be member of a group with about 25 Ph.D. students and postdocs from several countries, mostly working with processes in the marine environment.

The supervisor for the study will be Niels Peter Revsbech to whom questions about the project should be addressed at Revsbech@biology.au.dk
